The statue was made for the Paris World Exhibition in 1878. In 1935, the statue was moved to the gardens of the Porte de Saint-Cloud, and in 1986 to the courtyard of the Musée d’Orsay, where the statue was photographed.

On the base of the statue appears the name of the workshop that cast the statue:
