THIS PLAQUE WAS PLACED HERE ON SUNDAY 4 JUNE 2000 BY MEMBERS OF THE ANGLO-GERMAN FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY TO REMEMBER OVER 17,000 GERMAN AND OTHER CIVILIAN PRISONERS OF WAR INTERNED AT ALEXANDRA PALACE BETWEEN 1914 AND 1919, IN PARTICULAR THOSE WHO DIED DURING THAT PERIOD

In Alexandra Palace, at the beginning of the First World War, German citizens and other countries (Austria, Hungary) who were in Britain were placed in isolation. This is in addition to being a refugee camp for citizens from Belgium.
Starting in 1915, the British also began imprisoning German prisoners of war
