תפוצה טבעית: דרום איטליה עד ישראל

שייך למשפחת האברשים (כמו האברש, ה-azalea, הרודונדרון, החמוציות והאוכמניות). פירותיו האדומים, דמויי תות שדה, מתפתחים מפרחי האביב הלבנים. לרוב, הקליפה האדומה מתקלפת.

Eastern Strawberry Tree
Arbutus andrachne

Natural range: Southern Italy to Israel

A member of the heather family (together with heather, azalea, rhododendron, cranberry and blueberry). Real strawberries grow on low plants, not trees. This tree’s bland-tasting, red, strawberry-like fruits develop from creamy white spring flowers. The red bark often peels.

A close "cousin" (a different species of Arbutus, called menziesii) lives in far away California. How come these two "cousins" live so far apart? (Did one make "yeridah?")

גם עץ זה וגם "בן דודו" מקליפורניה גדלים באקלים ממוזג חם. שניהם התפתחו בחגורה צרה סביב כדור הארץ. כאשר אזורי הגידול הטבעיים צומצמו, הם נפרדו.

[The Answer to the question]
Requiring similar warm, temperate climates, both this tree species and its California "cousin" once ranged nearly around the whole world, in a narrow belt. When their natural ranges later shrunk, they became separated.
