The square is named after the Monastery of Las Descales Reales located there. The Coat of arms appearing on the sign is that of Joanna of Austria, Princess of Portugal and sister of Philip II, King of Spain (Juana de Austria), who founded the monastery. The meaning of the name of the monastery is the monastery of the royal women who go barefoot, this is because the nuns did not wear shoes.
