The sign is one of the signs indicating famous people who have stayed at the Chelsea Hotel.

The current sign shows the American writer Thomas Wolfe, who lived his last years in this hotel. The writer, who died at a young age from pneumonia, had time in his short life to write several long novels and dozens of short stories.
