On the sign:
Emblem of York Civic Trust
Near to this place, Margaret Clitherow of York, Saint of the Catholic Church, was martyred for her Christian Faith, on 25th March 1586.
One of a series of plaques on behalf of York Civic Trust commemorating historic places in the city of York.
The plaque on the Ouse Bridge commemorates Margaret Clitherow who was canonized by the Catholic Church and is also known as the "Pearl of York". Margaret became a Catholic, was arrested several times for her activities, and finally executed because she gave shelter to Catholic priests. She was executed using a press.
