Emblem of York Civic Trust
John Snow (1813-1858) Pioneer of Public Health and Anaesthesia Proved that Cholera is water-borne by removing a pump handle Born and lived in North Street until aged 14
The plaque commemorates the doctor who was one of the pioneers of medical anesthesia, and was also known as the one who discovered the source of the cholera epidemic that was in London.
The plaque is next to the memorial erected in his honor in the city of York where he was born. In the memorial , a water pump is shown, without the handle used to operate it lying next to it on the ground, indicating the way a cholera epidemic was stopped by removing the pump and thereby stopping the flow of contaminated water.
