The monument was erected in memory of the sculptor Edward Onslow Ford (1852-1901). The monument features a sculpture of a seated figure based on Ford’s sculpture: The Muse of Poetry.

The monument made by the architect J W Simpson, and the sculptor - Ford’s student Andrea Carlo Lucchesi was placed in the square in 1903. It is very close to the famous crosswalk that appears on the cover of the album Abbey Road by the Beetles.
