JUDAS TREE

Também conhecida por árvore de Judas ou árvore do Amor. Pertence à Família das Leguminosas. Uma característica típica e exclusiva desta Família é a ocorrência do fruto do tipo legume, também conhecido como vagem. Árvore de pequeno porte e de folha caduca. Árvore típica da região mediterrânica, frequentemente plantada como ornamental.

MORFOLOGIA
Arvore com tronco irregular, de casca rugosa.
Apresenta folhas grandes (7-12 cm) e circulares com forma de coração, verde-escuras ou verde-amareladas por cima e mais claras por baixo. Possui flores cor-de-rosa a roxo em pequenos cachos que surgem antes da folha (em março-abril).
O fruto é uma vagem comprida (6-10 cm) de cor castanha, quando madura, que se mantém na árvore até dezembro.

DIMENSÃO
Normalmente pode atingir os 10 metros.
Este exemplar tem altura e dimensão de copa - 11 metros. Diámetro altura peito - 4,5 metros. (dados de 2018)

CURIOSIDADES
Diz-se que foi numa olaia que Judas Iscariotes se enforcou, o que justifica o nome vulgar árvore-de-Judas; o formato da folha em coração explica o nome vulgar árvore-do-amor.
Este exemplar está classificado como árvore de interesse público D.R h-154 II Série 6/7/2000.

This species is also known as Afghan Deep Purple, White Swan and the Love Tree. Belonging to the Leguminosae family, the tree shares the typical but exclusive characteristic of bearing legume-type fruits also known as pods. A small-sized tree with deciduous leaves. This species is indigenous to the Mediterranean and frequently planted for ornamental purposes.

MORPHOLOGY
A tree with an irregularly shaped trunk covered in rough bark. There are large leaves (7-12 cm), circular in a heart-like shape, either dark green or yellow-green in colour on the surface and lighter below. The flowers are pink and purple, forming in small bunches and blossoming before the leaves appear (in March-April).
The fruits come in extended pods (6-10 cm), brown in colour when mature and remaining, on the tree through to December

SIZE
Normally, it can reach 10 meters.
This specimen has a height and dimension of 11 meters. Chest height diameter - 4.5 meters.

Throughout the main valley.

INTERESTING FACTS
The name stems from the legend that Judas Iscariot hung himself on a tree of this species whilst the heart-shaped leaves explain the common Tree of Love name.
This specimen is classified as tree of public interest DR nº154 II Series 6/7/2000.
