EVEN ISRAEL NEIGHBORHOOD
Built in 1873 as the sixth Jewish neighborhood outside the Old City at a private initiative of 53 residents of the Old City Jewish Quarter. The name is derived from the number of the founders. In the Hebrew alphanumeric code of assigning a numerical value to each letter, the Hebrew Even (stone) equals 53. Built as a fortified quarter with walls and a central courtyard, and a gate on each end, that could be locked.

Comments:
The sign shape is rectangular but its head is designed according to the silhouette of the old building of the Gymnasia Herzliya, which serves as a logo of the Council for the Preservation of Heritage Sites in Israel

The sign is on one of the neighborhood’s gates, as you can see in the photo taken that day Click for a larger image

A sign from the series of built heritage houses is placed at the second gate of the neighborhood (note that the year 1875 is written on this sign as the year the neighborhood was founded, which is probably the correct year) Click for sign's details
