The monument commemorates João I, King of Portugal also known as "The Good" who reigned between 1385-1433. During his reign, Portugal’s great discoveries around the world happened. He was also known to have maintained the independence of Portugal from the Kingdom of Castile.
The monument made by Leopoldo de Almeida was placed in 1971.
