On the sign:
Homenagem do Município de Cascais ao Rei D. Carlos I (1863-1908) Inaugurada em 1 de Fevereiro de 2008 por Sua Excelência o Presidente da República, Anibal Cavaco Silva, sendo Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Cascais, António dOrey Capucho.
The sign indicates the statue dedicated to King Carlos I, who reigned over Portugal from 1889 until his assassination in 1908. The assassination happened after the kings surrender to Britain for control of the African continent, the suspension of the constitution and the deterioration of the economic situation.
The statue, made by Luís Valadares, was placed in 2008 and shows the king, standing on the bridge of a ship, binoculars in his hand and his gaze directed to the sea.
