המדינה החשמונאית
כיבושי אלכסנדר הגדול ויורשיו הביאו לירושלים את השפעת יוון ההלניסטית. גזרות דת שהוטלו על היהודים בשנת 167 לפנה"ס הובילו למרד בהנהגת יהודה המכבי מבית חשמונאי. לאחר שלוש שנות לחימה הצליחו החשמונאים לשחרר את ירושלים, לטהר את המקדש ולכונן בה מלוכה יהודית.
המלכים החשמונאים חיזקו את ההגנה על העיר על ידי הצבת יחידות פרשים קלות בקרבתה, וציידו חלק מחיילי הרגלים בשריון כבד ובמגנים. לשומרי החומות הצטרפו גם שכירי חרב רבים מעמי האזור, שבחרו לשרת את הממלכה החשמונאית החזקה.

دولة الحشمونائيين
جعلت فتوحات الإسكندر الأكبر القدس جزءا من الإمبراطورية اليونانية. ادت القوانين الدينية التي فرضت على اليهود في عام 167 قبل الميلاد إلى ثورة بقيادة يهودا همكابي من بيت حشموناي، وبعد ثلاث سنوات من القتال. نجح الحشمونيون في تحرير القدس وتطهير الهيكل وتأسيس مملكة يهودية هناك. عررملوك الحشمونيون الدفاع عن المدينة بوحدات سلاح الفرسان الخفيفة المتمركزة بالقرب منها، كما روحوا بعض المشاة بالدروع الثقيلة والدروع كما انضم إلى حراس الاسوار العديد من المرتزقة من شعوب المنطقة الذين اختاروا خدمة مملكة الحشموليين القوية.

The Hasmonean Kingdom
Jerusalem became a part of the Greek Empire with the conquests of Alexander the Great. Religious decrees, imposed on the Jews in 167 BCE, led to a revolt under the leadership of Judah the Maccabee of the Hasmonean dynasty. After three years of fighting, the Hasmoneans liberated Jerusalem, purified the Temple, and established a Jewish monarchy. The Hasmonean kings strengthened the city’s defenses, and mercenaries from the neighboring nations chose to serve the strong Hasmonean kingdom and joined the guardians of the walls.
