A monument erected in 1922 to commemorate the Cambridge men fighting in the First World War. The monument showing a soldier returning from the battlefield, in his hand a helmet and also a rose (in addition to the rose at his foot) and a laurel wreath on his rifle, was made by Robert Tait McKenzie. The soldier character was modeled after a Christs College student named Kenneth Hamilton After World War II, the bottom line was added to the sign, indicating this war as well. Above the sign is a symbol of Alma Mater Cantabrigia, a mark of Cambridge University students who have passed their exams.
