תפוצה טבעית: מונטריי, קליפורניה, ארה"ב

בעבר כיסה עץ זה שטח גדול של אמריקה הצפונית. כיום הוא מכסה רק כ-10 ק"מ רבועים על חוף האוקינוס השקט. האקלים בישראל מתאים לעץ זה וכאן הוא גבוה יותר מאשר במקום תפוצתו הטבעי. שים לב לפיתולי הגזע שסיבתם אינה ברורה.

Natural range: Monterey, California, USA

Though once covering much of North America, now this tree’s natural range is just 10 square km of Pacific Ocean beachfront. In Israel’s climate, it grows taller than in its natural range. Notice the twisted trunk; function unknown.

יש המגדירים את ריחם של עלים אלו כ"לימוני". עצי מחט משתמשים בחומרים כימיים (עם ריחות שונים) כדי להתגונן בפני חרקים ופטריות.

[The Answer to the question]
Many people call the aroma of these leaves "lemony". Different conifers (cone-bearing trees) have different aromas, caused by chemicals the tree uses to protect itself from insects and fungi.
