שוק מחנה יהודה - אֲסַם האוכל של ירושלים
מחנה יהודה היה שמו השלישי והאחרון של השוק הגדול והמרכזי של ירושלים שקם על דרך יפו, בקצה מערב, בשנת תר"מ / 1880, כאשר יצאו השכונות הראשונות מבין החומות. ראשיתו בשדה הפתוח ליד שכונת בית יעקב ואז גם נקרא על שמה. ב-1910 בנתה ישיבת "עץ חיים" את שש-עשרה החנויות הראשונות וכעבור שנים אחדות, בשנת 1922, נבנו הרחובות אגס ותפוח ובהם כעשרים חנויות שנפתחו בסיוע ועד הקהילה. השוק נקרא אז "שוק ולירו" על שם בעליו של המגרש.
בשנת 1930 הקימו שמונים ואחד סוחרים בעזרת תמיכה מוועד הקהילה את יתר רחובות השוק: שזיף ואפרסק, שקד ואגוז, תות וחרוב. בתוך זמן קצר הוקם השוק העיראקי הקטן והשוק הגרוזיני. אחרי מלחמת ששת הימים, כשהוקמו השכונות החדשות ונפתחו מרכולים חדשים, ידע השוק תקופה קשה והעזובה פשטה בו. ב-1985 החל תהליך שיקומו של השוק בשיתוף העירייה בראשות טדי קולק ויחד עם הסוחרים, עד שחזר להיות הלב הפועם של מערב העיר. // כתב: מאיר ברוזה

Mahane Yehuda market - Jerusalem’s breadbasket
Mahane Yehuda was the third and final name for Jerusalem’s large central market which developed on Jaffa Road on the city’s western end in 1880, when the first neighborhoods were being built outside the Old City walls. It started in an open field next to the Beit Yaakov neighborhood, and was then known by this name. In 1920 the Etz Haim Yeshiva built the first 16 shops and several years later, in 1922, Agas (pear) and Tapuach (apple) streets were built with some 20 shops opened with the help of the Community Committee. At this time the market was known as the Valero Market after the name of the plot’s owners.
In 1931, the market’s other streets were built by 81 merchants with the help and support of the Community Committee: Shazif (plum) and Afarsek (peach), Shaked (almond) and Egoz (walnut), Tut (mulberry) and Haruv (carob). The little Iraqi market and Market A developed soon after. After the Six Day War, with the building of the city’s new neighborhoods and the opening of supermarkets, the market went through a difficult period, becoming very run down. Its rejuvenation started in 1985, with a cooperative venture between the municipality under Teddy Kollek together with the market’s traders, eventually restoring the vibrant heart of West Jerusalem. //By: Meir Broza

יום טוב שרים
תרמ"ח - תשל"ט

ב-1929 רכש 6 חנויות למסחר סיטוני לפירות וירקות במחנה יהודה ובמרכזו פתח את הבזאר על שטח שחכר משלטונות המנדט באחורי בניין מוריה. היה גובה את מס ה"ארדיה" (אדמה) מכל סוחרי השוק זה.

Yom-Tov Shrem
1888-1979

In 1929 bought 6 shops for fruit and vegetable wholesaling in Mahane Yehuda. In the center of the market opened a bazaar on a site leased from the Mandatory authorities behind the Moriah building. He charged all the businesses in this market a land tax.

תרע"ד - תשס"א

ירקן בשוק מחנה יהודה. בשנת 1934 נסע עם קבוצה בשליחות הסוכנות היהודית לפולין להביא לארץ עולות באמצעות נישואים פיקטיביים. המשפט שהנחהו בחייו היה: " הכסף לא חשוב, חשובה הברכה".

Vegetable seller in Mahane Yehuda. In 1934 went to Poland with a Jewish Agency group to bring Jewish women to Palestine by means of fictitious marriages. His motto was, "Count your blessings, not your money"

Haim Seri
1879-1962

Came to the country from Yemen in 1882, Jerusalem’s first milkman. Went up and down the streets on his donkey selling milk that he bought from Arabs and the Jewish farmers of Motza. Also sold cheeses and butter that he made himself. This colorful character loved his fellow men and gave charity in secret.

עלה ארצה מפרס בשנת 1921 בחברת עולים נוספים שהביא "על חשבונו". לאחר מסע ארוך חלקו ברכיבה על חמורים, הגיעו לירושלים.
כאן לימד תחילה ב"חדר" ואחר כך היה לירקן בשוק מחנה יהודה.

Hacham Zerubavel Shoshani
1887-1970

Came to the country from Persia in 1921 together with other olim whom he brought with at his expense. They reached Jerusalem after a long journey, some of it by donkey. At first taught in a "cheder", then sold vegetables in the Mahane Yehuda market.

Every morning he would push around his hand-cart with the jars of drink which he prepared for sale in his home in Zichron Tuvia Street and come back in the evening.
