תפוצה טבעית: מיוון מזרחה לפרס ודרומה לירדן

עץ זה, ירוק עד, עם צמרת "הנמתחת" השמימה, שותלים בבתי קברות וחצרות כנסיות. מאחורי כתפך השמאלית תראה את ברוש הבר, הרחב יותר. השווה ביניהם. ההבדל הוא בזוית הצמיחה של הענפים וכנראה נובע משינוי בחומר התורשתי בגן אחד בלבד.

Italian Cypress
Cupressus sempervirens

Natural range: Greece to N. Iran, south to Jordan

Pointing toward heaven, this narrow mutant variety often stands, forever green, in cemeteries and church yards. Compare to the broader wild variety, behind your left shoulder. The difference is in the branch angles, probably controlled by a single gene.

האיצטרובלים הנקביים, עגולים ומקושקשים, דומים לכדורגל (בבקשה אל תקטוף אצטרובל מהעץ). הביטו לתוך אחד האיצטרובלים שקשקשיו נפתחו: על רקע אדום נראים פסים זעירים, לבנים. זה היה מקום מושבם של הזרעים לפני פיזורם. כמה זרעים היו בערך?

The female cones, round and scaled, resemble soccer balls. (Please don’t pick cones from the tree.) Look inside one whose scales have opened. Tiny white stripes against a reddish background show where the seeds once rested, before their release. Can you tell how many seeds were once there?
