City of Rehovot The city of Rehovot was founded in 1890 and was built on the lands of Khirbet Duran, a site from the Byzantine Roman and Early Arab period associated with "Doron", a Jewish settlement from the Mishnah and Talmudic period.
Declared a city in 1950.
The name Rehovot was suggested by Israel Belkind, from the verse "For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land" (Genesis 26:22).
Geographical location - the southern coastal plain.
Jurisdiction - 22,500 dunams.
On the 7th of Adar 1890, a contract for the sale of the land was signed, and on Purim 1890, the inauguration ceremony of the colony was held near the Old Well.
In 1904 - the first orchard was planted there.
In 1920 - the railway station was established.
In 1932 - the station for the study of agriculture was established.
In 1934 - the Ziv Institute was built in the city.
In 1942 - the Faculty of Agriculture was established.
In 1949 - The Weizmann Institute of Science was founded.
In 1963 - the Center for Settlement Research, the Institute for Biological Pesticides, was established.
In 1970 - the School of Nutrition Sciences was established.
In 1963 - the Center for Research and the Institute of Pest Control were established.
The Magistrates Court was established in Rehovot in 1939 and was located in the Sternberg House, 177 Herzl St. (corner of Geula). In 1963, it moved to its current location on Rozensky Street.
