The brigade was established in 1962 as an armored brigade 520 and included the 113 Mechanized infantry Battalion and two Centurion tank battalions - "Shot" 126 and 142.
During the Six Day War in June 1967, the brigade fought on the Sinai front.
In 1969 the division was renamed 217th.
In 1970 the 113th Battalion was converted into a tank battalion and the entire brigade was equipped with "light Shot" tanks.
During the Yom Kippur War of October 1973, the brigade fought on the Sinai front.
In 1982, the 645th Brigade (217) participated in Operation Peace of the Galilee.

During the Six-Day War, June 5-11, 1967, the brigade fought on the Sinai front: by breaking into Jabal Livni, Bir Hassana, Bir Tamda, the Mitla crossing and al-Gundi towards Ras Sudr to the Gulf of Suez.

In the Yom Kippur War of October 6-25, 1973, it was the first reserve brigade to reach the Sinai front.
As part of Division 162 she participated in battles:

Destruction of the 25th Egyptian Armored Brigade, equipped with T62 tanks in the area east of the Great Bitter Lake.
Crossing the Suez Canal and breaking through from the top of the bridge through the Abu-Sultan complexes, the "Haifa", "Arel" junction and a "Makzera", while destroying infantry, armor and surface-to-air missile bases coming from Jabal Jenifa.
