בשלהי התקופה הרומית ובראשית התקופה הביזנטית (המאות הד’- הה’ לספירה) נכנסו לשימוש מכבשי בורג שנחשבו משוכללים יותר מבחינה טכנולוגית. במכבש הבורג הופעל לחץ ישיר על הסלים (העקלים) באמצעות בורג עץ, שהחליף את הקורה והמשקולות במכבש הקורה.

Direct pressure screw extruder
In the late Roman and early Byzantine periods (4th-5th centuries AD) screw presses came into use that were considered more technologically sophisticated. In the screw press, direct pressure was applied to the baskets using the wooden screw, which replaced the beam and the weights in the beam press.
