Born in Drohobych, Ukraine (1874-1925), he immigrated to Israel in 1906, but a year later returned to Germany, where he worked most of his life. He is considered the first Zionist artist. He painted many illustrations on the subjects of the Bible and Zionism. As a photographer, he is best known for the famous picture of Herzl on the balcony of the Basel hotel, taken at the Zionist Congress, as well as paintings in which Herzl appears as a biblical prophet. In Israel, he was among the founders of the Bezalel School of Art, designed the schools emblem and taught there.
