Comments:
The plaque on the entrance fence to Columbia University and near St. Paul’s Chapel commemorates the defense of New York City in the war against the British Empire (1812-1815), a war that broke out because of the United States’ desire to expand in the northwest direction. The end of the war was signed in the Treaty of Ghent, at the end of which the parties returned to the situation they were in before the outbreak of the war.

The plaque was placed on the Amsterdam Street corner of Fayerweather Hall in 1910 by the Empire State Society of the U. S. Daughters of 1812

The place where the sign is located was photographed on the same day by the same photographer (in the background you can see St. Paul’s Chapel) Click for a larger image
