The gallery was established in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victorias reign (60 years). It opened in 1900 and was designed by J. M. Brydon. Initially it was also used as a public library, but later it was designated only for the display of works of art.
Above the side entrance door is a statue of Queen Victoria, and below it is the inscription: HIM VICTORIA ERECTED IN LOYALTY AND LOVE BY THE WOMEN OF BATH 1901 Click for a larger image
