The statue, made by Jacques Perrin, commemorates the Marquis de Condorcet, mathematician, philosopher and statesman (1743-1794). He was a member of the French Academy of Sciences, was appointed inspector of the royal mint, after the French Revolution was elected as a representative of Paris in the Legislative Assembly. After opposing some of the acts of terrorism that were committed after the French Revolution, he was imprisoned, and two days later he was found dead in his cell.
The statue was placed in 1894, destroyed in World War II (1941) and restored in 1991
