This is a picture of the Sphinx in the Delphi Museum. The sphinx is a mythological creature of a lion with a woman’s head, sometimes with wings. It first appeared in Egypt where instead of a woman’s head, the head of a pharaoh was mounted. The Sphinx has a prominent place in Greek mythology, in particular the fact that it laid siege to the city of Thebes until its riddle was answered.
The sphinx shown on the sign was placed near the temple of Apollo in Delphi, and was dedicated to Apollo by the people of the island of Naxos.
