History of Paris

Faculty of Medicine
The surgeon La Martinière obtained from Louis XV the construction of an Academy of Surgery. From 1769 to 1786, the architect Gondouin carried out part of a vast project, marked by a return to classical Antiquity: a portico with four rows of Ionic columns in front of a large courtyard surrounded by a colonnade; the large amphitheater opens at the back under a Corinthian peristyle. In 1794, the Convention brought together rival corporations, doctors and surgeons, under the name of “School of Health”, renamed under the Empire “Faculty of Medicine”.

From 1878 to 1900, the architect P. Ginain took up Gondouin’s plans to build on Boulevard Saint-Germain a building with a beautiful staircase, which houses the council room, the rich library, the museum and the archives of the Faculty.
