Gan Sorek - past and present Moshav Gan Sorek was founded on the second day of Av 1950, July 16, 1950, the youngest settlement in the Gan Reva Regional Council.
The Moshav was established as an extension of Moshav Netaim and was called Netaim B. Its settlers were families of new immigrants mainly from Poland and Russia, refugees from the European Holocaust, and veterans of the War of Independence. On a desolate area, residential buildings-shacks were erected, without paving, the area of each shack is about 20 square meters. Thorns grew the land around them, but the strong desire to hold on to the land and start an agricultural settlement overcame the many difficulties.
In 1951, to the joy of the settlers of Netaim B, they received budgets from the agency for the construction of permanent homes, with great vigor some of the men approached the construction work. They made blocks with their own hands. Each house is 24 square meters with a shower and toilet outside, there was no electricity, these houses were like a palace compared to the shanties.
The cooperation with Netaim was not to their satisfaction. The veterans felt ownership of the new settlement, the public buildings were in Netaim, accessibility was difficult and the main desire of the settlers of Netaim B was to cultivate their land and not the land of others.
In 1955, representatives of NetaimB were appointed to the appropriate institutions and asked to disassociate from Moshav Netaim. In those days, the settlement of Netaim B. numbered 30 families, the institutions argued that such a number of families did not justify the granting of the requested permits. After pressures and a hard war, the long-awaited approvals were granted but only for a year - a trial year, when everyone was sure that we would not be able to last.
In the same year, a kindergarten, a mixture warehouse, a grocery store and a dairy were established. One of the members who was also a committee member was sent to register the seat in the cooperative association, and to find a name for it in the names committee, in the prime minister’s office. And the name "Gan Sorek" was chosen.
In those days the residents of the moshav engaged in agriculture: orchards, vegetables, chicken coops and barns. Today the branches of agriculture include: greenhouses for growing flowers, fruit tree nursery, orchards. Avocado and olives.
In 1992, on Givat HaKorkar at the entrance to the moshav, where the Ma’abara was, the houses of the new neighborhood were built - the "sons’ neighborhood", and another 31 families joined the moshav, many sons returned, they were joined by families from the city, in farms where sons and daughters live alongside their parents, the second and third generation of the founders.
Today, 2022, the moshav has about 80 families. There are public buildings in Moshav: a secretariat, a club, an active synagogue, a consumer center, playgrounds and a sports field
Although the first days were difficult and bitter, the moshav is thriving and flourishing thanks to the determination and faith of the founding generation. We will continue to step forward as a flourishing, established and independent seat as a salute to the founding generation and for the future generation.
