Walter (1694-1778), who was known as one of the greatest intellectuals of his generation, lived most of his life in France (Paris). In 1726 he was imprisoned in the Bastille prison after a duel with a French nobleman. Walter was given the opportunity to go into exile instead of prison and he went to England where he stayed until 1729.
