The statue made by the sculptor Mari Andriessen and placed in 1957 commemorates the people of Rotterdam who fell in the fight for the independence of the Netherlands in the Second World War. In the sculpture there are 4 figures, a woman looking back, a boy and a man looking at each other, and a man with a shovel looking forward. When the looks in the different directions symbolize the connection between the past and the future. On the base of the statue appears the motto of the city of Rotterdam: Sterker door Strijd - Stronger through effort
