Çeşmenin Yapılış Tarihi: 1732

Çeşmeyi Yaptırana Dair Bilgi: Tophane Çeşmesi’ni inşa ettiren Sultan I. Mahmud Osmanlı Devleti’nin 24. padişahı olup, 2 Ağustos 1696 tarihinde Edirne Sarayı’nda doğmuştur. Patrona Halil İsyanı üzerine saltanatı sona eren III. Ahmed’in ardından tahta çıkan I. Mahmud bir süre isyancıların isteklerine göz yummuş ancak yavaş yavaş hepsini bertaraf ederek yönetimi tümüyle ele geçirmiştir.

Information about the Builder:
Sultan Mahmud I, who commissioned the Tophane Fountain, was the 24th sultan of the Ottoman Empire and was born on August 2, 1696 in Edirne Palace. Mahmud I ascended the throne after Ahmed, whose reign ended after the Patrona Halil Rebellion. Mahmud I gradually eliminated all rebels and took over the administration completely. During the reign of Mahmud I, who pursued a peaceful and balanced policy in domestic and foreign politics, special attention was given to the reform of the army, library construction and the development of water facilities. The Taksim waterway, which supplies water to the surrounding areas of Galata, Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş and Ortaköy, was completed during the reign of Mahmud I.

History:
The Tophane Square Fountain, surrounded by the Kiliç Ali Pasha Complex in the southwest, Nusretiye Mosque in the southeast, Tophane atelier in the west and the dock in the east, is one of the important structures emphasizing the public square phenomenon in traditional Ottoman urbanism, and played a unifying role in terms of social life in the Ottoman culture. The site hosted shops formerly, which were later demolished for the construction of the fountain. The fountain, which was built by the Customs Emini Ahmet Ağa and commissioned by Mahmud I, has also been the subject of many written and visual sources, especially belonging to the westerners.
