The statue shows King Leonidas the First of Sparta who became known for his heroism in the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC), a battle in which he and 300 soldiers stayed to fight the Persian Empire until the death.
The sentence that appears at the top of the monument: ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ (Molon labe - come and take them) was Leonidas response to the Persians demand that the Spartan soldiers surrender their weapons.
