On the sign:
MARTYRDOM OF SAINT PANCRAS STUART SMITH - SCULPTURE MORRIS SINGER - FOUNDERS THE GIFT OF WILLIAM THORNTON
The sign is at the beginning of Gloucester Bridge, which is in the district formerly named after St. Pancras.
The plaque shows Saint Pancras, a young Roman who converted to Christianity, and in 304, when he was 14 years old, he was beheaded because he refused to change his religion. In the plaque, the saint is seen being executed in an arena with beasts of prey, it is likely that this is an execution that is easier to describe than beheading.
