Dean Court Hotel logo Yorks Lockdown Heroes
[and another sign below it] York Civic Trust Plaque When the Lockdown came into effect on 23rd March the Dean Court Hotel had already made the decision to remain open exclusively to NHS staff as the hospital is only half a mile away. The Idea was to offer bedrooms at a significantly reduced rate (£20 per night) to enable NHS staff to stay at the hotel to get some well-deserved rest which would include fresh laundry, food and amenities and five staff gave up their home life to volunteer for the task.
Through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linkedin as well as local radio and appearing on Look North word began to spread of our generous offering and the good people of York took it one step further and began donating the small fee so that the hard working NHS could stay for free. These donations arrived even before our first NHS worker arrived. In total over £4000 was raised and not one of the NHS staff had to pay a penny to stay here.
Although this plaque has been given to us through a nomination by one of the doctors that stayed here, it in fact belongs to us all and is a testament to the feeling of good will and community spirit that was so evident in York in the early days of this pandemic.
This plaque is one of the plaques awarded by the York Civic Trust to "Heroes of the Lockout". Entities that acted on behalf of the public during the lockdown imposed by the outbreak of the Corona virus disease (COVID-19). The places that received signs were chosen by the public.
In this sign, the hotel added another sign describing its contribution during the lockdown.
