A RICORDO DELL AZIONE CONDOTTA CONTRO LA PORTAEREI "AQUILA" DA PARTE DEGLI INCURSORI DELLA MARINA MILITARE NEL QUARANTENNALE DELLA LIBERAZIONE 19.4. 1945-19. 4. 1984
A commemorative plaque located in the area of the port of Genoa. The plaque marks 40 years (approximately), to the destruction of Italy’s first aircraft carrier named Aquila. During World War II, the Italians tried to turn a passenger ship into an aircraft carrier. The works that began in 1941 were done in the port of Genoa, but were not finished due to Italy’s surrender to the Allies in 1943. The Germans took possession of the ship, and in light of the Italians’ fear that the Germans would use the ship to block the entrance to the port of Genoa, a submarine sabotage force was sent to attack the ship. The force of the COMSUBIN unit - (Comando Raggruppamento Subacquei e Incursori Teseo Tesei - the force of divers "Teseo Tesei") carried out the sabotage on April 19, 1945
The location of the sign is approximate but it is known to have been photographed near this location.
