Welcome to "The Locomotive Complex 70414"
A steam locomotive is driven by steam pressure. In a typical steam locomotive, the steam is produced by heating a sealed water boiler, usually by fire with a variety of fuels. The water vapor that is created as a result of boiling accumulates inside the boiler and creates pressure, which when necessary is used to push pistons in a back and forth movement. The movement of the linear pistons is converted into a circular movement of the wheels.
During the Turkish rule, many steam locomotives traveled on the Turkish railway. The British, who arrived in Israel during the First World War, brought with them wider steam locomotives, one of which was stamped with the number 70414. In 1956, the young state of Israel inaugurated the renewed railway line to Beersheba, with a new route and location. On this line ran the locomotive numbered 70414. In 1959 the era of steam locomotives in Israel ended when Israel Railways completed the replacement of steam locomotives with advanced diesel locomotives.
The steam locomotive today - a bridge between the old and the new - the locomotive has been preserved and restored identical to the original locomotive 70414, from the 1950s. The steam locomotive bridges the past. For the future, between the period when Beer-Sheva was a strategic stronghold over which the Turks and the English fought, to the period when today’s Beer-Sheva is a national strategic stronghold.
