The monument dedicated to Jose I, King of Portugal. A statue on which the king appears riding his horse was the first statue in which a figure on a horse appears that was made in Portugal, and was also the first statue made of a person while he was alive.
The statue was made by Joaquim Machado de Castro, and it was made after the reconstruction of Lisbon from the earthquake of 1755.
The statue is placed in the Praça do Comércio which was also rebuilt after the earthquake.
