On the sign:
CHARING CROSS HOSPITAL
In commemoration of Esther Bruce 1912-1994 Worked here as a WWII fire warden. Her autobiography was the first to document the life of a working-class Black British woman
The plaque commemorates the seamstress Esther Bruce, who was born in Fulham, London, UK, and during World War II served as a fire warden at Fulham Hospital (now called Charing Cross Hospital). But her publicity came mainly thanks to the autobiography she wrote, which documented for the first time the life of a black worker from the working class in Britain.
The sign was inaugurated in 2022 by the Mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham Council, on the road leading to Charing Cross Hospital.
Note that unlike the other blue signs, this sign is on the ground and not on a building wall.
