The plaque is on the statue dedicated to a philanthropist who was born in the United States and moved to London, and is considered the father of modern philanthropy. Peabody was a banker who devoted his fortune to charity, and founded many organizations that had this as their goal.
The statue by William Wetmore Story was placed in 1869, while Peabody was still alive (he died 3 months after the statue was placed), and is one of the few statues made of living figures. A replica of the statue is in Baltimore, Maryland, United States.
