On the sign:
ERECTED BY THE SOCIETY OF ARTS
SIR HARRY VANE STATESMAN LIVED HERE. BORN 1612 BEHEADED 1662.
The sign is on the wall of the fence surrounding the house where the statesman Henry Vane the Younger, also called Harry Vane, lived. Vane also served during his career as Governor of Massachusetts Bay, America. After a stay in New England, America, he returned to England and served in several positions including treasurer of the Royal Navy. In the civil war in England between the supporters of the monarchy and the parliament, he supported Oliver Cromwell. After the return of King Charles II to power in 1660, Vane was accused of treason and executed in 1662.
The sign was placed in 1897, the house where the statesman lived, was destroyed, but the fence and the sign remained.
