The sculpture was made by Edmund von Hellmer, who won a competition to design Goethe’s sculpture in 1890. He finished work on the model of the sculpture in 1895, and in 1900 the sculpture was placed.
On the back of the statue is a relief depicting the genius’ contribution to humanity and below it a plaque on which is written: ERRICHTET VOM WIENER - GOETHE - VEREIN IM JAHRE MDCCCC
