The sculpture commemorates Dr. Theodor Billroth who is considered the pioneer of modern abdominal surgery. Dr. Billroth was also an amateur musician, who was very close to composer Johannes Brahms.
The sculpture was created by the sculptor Michael Drobil and was erected in 1944 during Nazi rule, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Dr. Billroth, who was noted as a "genius of the German spirit".
