Nutria (Coypu)
Although not originally from Israel, Nutrias are now among the country’s most widespread mammals. They were brought here in the early 1950s from Argentina to serve furriers in northern Israel. When that business failed, they were released, going on to spread throughout the country. They are an invasive species.

Nutrias are good swimmers with protruding rodent teeth and long, thick rat-like tails. They feed on aquatic and riverside plants and live in burrows that they dig above the water line in the river banks.
