The statue was created in memory of William Henry Seward (1801-1872) who was Governor of the State of New York and Secretary of State of the United States. As Secretary of State he is best known for purchasing Alaska land from Russia.
The sculpture was created by the sculptor Randolph Rogers and was erected in 1876
