THE POET AND TRANSLATOR YONATHAN RATOSH (URIEL SHELACH) LIVED & WORKED IN THIS HOUSE
The sign is on the wall of the house where Yonathan Ratosh - poet and translator, born in Warsaw, Poland (1908-1981), immigrated to Israel in 1919. Born under the name Uriel Heilperin, in 1937 he began to sign his poems under the pen name Yonathan Ratosh. Ratosh invented many words in the Hebrew language, and also translated many science fiction books. He transferred his real name to Uriel Shelah. Ratosh was one of the founders of the "Canaanites" (Young Hebrews) movement that advocated breaking away from Diaspora Judaism, and establishing a "Hebrew" nation while relying on the peoples who lived in Israel in the past. The sign was placed in 2015
