מוצא: ארצות הים התיכון

תכונות: עץ פרי ירוק עד, מתנשא עד גובה 10 מ’. פריו מוארך וירוק ובהגיעו לבשלות הוא משחיר ומבריק. עשוי להתקיים במשך דורות. קשה לקבוע את גילם של זיתים קשישים כי חלקם הפנימי נרקב.

סיפור: עץ זה הובא מחצרו של מיכל פוחצ’בסקי, הגנן העברי הראשון אשר נטע את גן המושבה בשנים 1889/90. כרם הזיתים הראשון במושבה ניטע בשנת 1884/5 על ידי המייסד אליעזר אלחנן שליט, חלוץ מגדלי הזיתים במושבה.

Name: Olea Europaea

Origin: Mediterranean region

Traits: Evergreen, reaching 10 meters. The fruit is elliptical green and matte when unripe, darkening and becoming glossy while fully ripened. Olive trees may live for many generations. It is very difficult to determine the date of ancient olive trees because internal sections rot.

The story: This tree was brought into the gardens from the courtyard of Michl Pohachevsky’s home. Michl was the first Hebrew gardener, and planted Gan Hamoshava in 1889-90. The settlement’s first olive grove was planted in 1884-5 by founder, Eliezer Elhanan Shalit, the township’s pioneer olive grower.
