כיכר הנביא צפניה
שכונת הגנים אפרידר תוכננה על ידי האדריכלים נורמן הנסון ורוי קנטרוביץ מדרום אפריקה.
השכונה הוקמה ביוזמת הפדרציה של יהודי דרום אפריקה אשר חברה לחברת "עמידר" בשנת 1951 במטרה להקים עיר במדינה הצעירה שזה עתה קמה. השכונה נחנכה במעמד נשיא המדינה השני, יצחק בן צבי, בשנת 1954.
ביום י"ז בכסלו תש"ך (18 בדצמבר 1958) נערך במקום טקס סמלי ובו הועברה שכונת אפרידר מידי יהדות דרום אפריקה לידי עיריית אשקלון.
על טבלת הנצחה נכתב: "וּבָנּו מִמְּךָ חָרְבוֹת עוֹלָם מוֹסְדֵי דוֹר-וָדוֹר תְּקוֹמֵם וְקֹרָא לְךָ גֹּדֵר פֶּרֶץ מְשֹׁבֵב נְתִיבוֹת לָשָׁבֶת" (ישעיהו נ"ח, 12).
במרכז השכונה עומד מגדל שעון, המהווה ציון אדריכלי של השכונה. מגדל השעון הופיע על בול דואר שהונפק לכבוד אשקלון בשנת תש"ך.

Prophet Zephania’s Square
The South African Zionist Federation decided after the establishment of the state of Israel to contribute its share by founding a city in the young state. In 1951 it joined the government company Amidar and established the Afridar company. A team of planners from South Africa headed by Norman Hansen and Roy Kanterovitz began planning a garden suburb with a commercial and cultural area.
In May 1954 the site was inaugurated in the presence of- President Itzhak Ben-Zvi and named Afridar Center. The dedication plaque includes a quotation from the Prophet Isaiah (58/12).

Note that unlike other signs from the same series, the head of the sign is not designed according to the silhouette of the old building of the Herzliya Gymnasium

The plaque also contains a sign with the verse from the Book of Zephaniah:
And it shall be a lot for the remnant of the house of Judah, whereupon they shall pasture. In the houses of Ashkelon they shall lie down in the evening, for the Lord their God shall visit upon them and return their captivity
