Historical Background
A route that runs along Palmach Street in Jerusalem
and commemorates the Palmach and especially the Palmach heroines.
The route is named after Haviva Reik, Netiva Ben Yehuda (who lived on Palmach Street). It is not clear who is meant by Aviva (on many signs, Zohara Levyatov is mentioned together with Haviva and Netiva, but we could not find a connection between her and the name Aviva).
In addition to Netiva Ben Yehuda
, and Haviva Reik
, the following women are also commemorated: Vera Solomons, a British philanthropist (who is commemorated even though she was not a fighter)
, Sarah Aaronson
, Zohara Levyatov
, SSara Schenirer (educator)
In addition, the signs on the route deal with terms most of which are related to the
War of Independence period and before: Bilu
,
Nili ,
illegal immigrant , Palmach
, the siege of Jerusalem and the convoys intended to break the siege
,
,
,
and more
About the signs
There are three types of signs on the route:
Directional signs (similar to street signs), rectangular signs indicating the beginning of the route, and are also found along it
Information signs about personalities (usually women), rectangular signs found on the walls of houses
Themed signs placed around lampposts, consisting of two parts that together "wrap" the lamppost
