Background
The New York Library Way - a project launched in 1996 by the New York Public Library, the Grand Central Partnership and the New Yorker magazine, in which quotations from well-known authors, or those dealing with books and literature, are embedded in bronze plaques. The plaques designed by artist
Gregg LeFevre were placed in 1998 from the New York Public Library building along 41st Street.
In most of the signs the illustrations are related to the subject of the quote or book, for example a glass of wine in a quote from the book of Bohumil Hrabal
, compasses and the Compass rose in a quote from the poem "Compass" by the Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges
, motifs from paintings by Picasso in a quote from the book he wrote
, a quote from Francis Bacons book about the fact that there are books that must be swallowed, must be tasted.. in the illustration a "chewed" book
and many more.
About the Signs
The signs are made of bronze, rectangular in shape and are placed on the ground along the library walkway from the New York Library building along 41st Street.
