משפחת החכם הרב בנימין הלוי מקורה של משפחת הלוי בספרד. לאחר הגירוש (1492) עברו בניה לליבורנו שבאיטליה ושהו בה 240 שנה. בשנת תצ"ב (1732) עלה ר ’ אברהם הלוי (סגרי) לארץ-ישראל, לצפת, ונפטר בירושלים בשנת תקל"ב ( 1772). צאצאיו לדורותיהם כיהנו כרבנים, כתבו ספרי הלכה, היו בין מנהיגי העדה הספרדית בירושלים ונשלחו כשד"רים מטעם הקהילה לתפוצות ישראל. ר’ אלעזר הלוי יצא לקושטא ב-1779 ונפטר בה כעבור ארבע שנים, ר’ רפאל אשר אליה הלוי חיבר את הספר "ולאשר אמר" - תשובות וחידושים, וכן ספר על הרמב"ם. נפטר בתקצ"ה (1835). באותה שנה נולד ר’ אברהם אשר הלוי, אשר לימים נשלח לתורכיה (1864), ויצא להודו (1882) כדי לבדוק את מעמדם של "היהודים השחורים" בני העבדים המשוחררים ופסק כי לאחר טבילה דינם כדין גרים. נפטר ברמ"ה (1885). בניו, ר’ יוסף מרדכי הלוי ור’ בנימין הלוי, התייתמו בילדותם ועברו לאפוטרופסותו של הרב יוסף רפאל עוזיאל, אביו של "הראשון לציון" הרב בן - ציון מאיר חי עוזיאל.

הרב בנימין הלוי (תר"מ-תשי"ג 1953-1880) נצר למשפחת רבנים דור אחר דור בירושלים. נמנה עם ראשי העדה הספרדית בעיר ופעל רבות לטובת מוסדות ציבור ומפעלי חסד וצדקה. כיהן כראב"ד (ראש אב בית דין), יו"ר ועד שכונת " אוהל משה" וגבאי בית-הכנסת "אוהל משה". תחת הנהגתו הותקנה לראשונה מערכת הביוב ואספקת המים לשכונה ושוקם בית-הכנסת שנפגע קשות ברעש האדמה (1927). ייסד את בית הזקנים הספרדי, לימד תלמוד בישיבות "תפארת ירושלים" ו"פורת יוסף" ובבית-הספר לחינוך עיוורים. היה תומך נלהב בתנועה הציונית נבחר לאסיפת הנבחרים כנציג היהדות הדתית-ציונית וכיהן בה עד לפיזורה. צאצאיו: אשר, יעקב, אלעזר, אסתר (מונבז). יפה (שפרמן) ונעמי (גולדמן) - כולם דור תשיעי בארץ.

The Family of Rabbi Binyamin Halevy. The origins of the Halevy family are in Spain. After the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 its members moved to Livorno, Italy, where they remained for 240 years. In 1732 R. Avraham Halevy (Segre) emigrated to Safed and passed away 40 years later in Jerusalem. His descendants were rabbis and scholars who authored books interpreting religious law, were among the leaders of the Sephardic community in Jerusalem, and were sent as its emissaries to Jewish communities in the Diaspora. R. Avraham Asher Halevy wɛs born in 1835. In 1882, on a mission to India to examine the status of the "Black Jews", he decided that after ritual immersion (tvila) they would be considered converts to Judaism. Avraham Asher died in 1885. His two young orphaned sons, R. Yosef Mordechai Halevy and R. Binyamin Halevy, were placed under the guardianship of R. Yosef Raphael Ouziel, father of the future Chief Rabbi.
Rabbi Binyamin Halevy (1880- 1953), descended from a long line of rabbis in Jerusalem, was one of the leaders of the Sephardic community in the city and was very active on behalf of public institutions and charity organizations. He was president of a rabbinical court, chairman of the Ohel Moshe Quarter Committee, and beadle of the Ohel Moshe Synagogue. Under his leadership, a system for water supply and sewage was installed in the quarter, and the synagogue, which had been badly damaged in an earthquake in 1927, was rebuilt. He established the Sephardic old age home. An ardent supporter of Zionism, he was elected a member of the Representative Assembly, as a representative of religious Zionism, serving on it until was disbanded. His children: Asher Ya’akov Elazar, Esther (Menbaz), Yaffa (Shaferman) and Naomi (Goldman) are all the ninth-generation in the country
