שם: פיקוס השקמה

מוצא: מזרח אפריקה הטרופית

תכונות: עץ נוי ופרי ירוק עד. מתנשא עד גובה 15 מ’. הפגות (הפרי) קבועות על ענפים היוצאים ישירות מתוך הגזע. הפירות חסרי זרעים וראויים למאכל.

סיפור: ביום העלייה לקרקע, טו’ באב תרמ"ב, טעו חלק ממייסדי ראשון לציון בדרכם אל אדמתם, ובמקום להגיע אל גבעת המושבה (כיום כיכר המייסדים), הם הגיעו אל גבעה תלולה ובראשה שקמה עתיקת יומין, כיום חלקת המייסדים בבית הקברות גני אסתר.

Name: Ficus Sycomorus

Origin: Tropical East Africa

Traits: Evergreen ornamental fruiting tree with a height of 15 meters. The fruit grows direct from the branches. Fruit is seedless and edible.

The story: On 15 Av 5642, corresponding to 31 July 1882, being foundation day, some of Rishon LeZion’s founders erred on their way to their land. Instead of reachirg the settlement’s hill, currently the location known as Kikar Hameyasdim (Founders’ Square) they reached a steep hill topped by an ancient sycomorus. This is currently in the Founders section of the Ganei Ester Cemetery.
